Lincoln was Ford's premium brand, but oddly the name wasn't used on the Continental Mark II, despite it being built by the company. The car was Ford's attempt at outdoing Cadillac and oozed opulence everywhere. Inside it was swathed in Scottish leather and it had classy separate gauges, electric everything and just one optional extra: air-conditioning. The car was tailor made, with the body's trail fitted to the 'cow belly' chassis (it dropped down between each end) before being painted, sanded and polished by hand. Also, the engines were hand picked off the production line to ensure the best possible performance from each car. Once finished, all went through a 12-mile (19 km) road test followed by an in-depth inspection with Inning where necessary. Ford is repnted to have lost $1,000 on each one sold, even though they were priced at $9,695, some $2,300 more than a Cadillac.
