The Citroen Light 15, or Traction-avant to its many admirers, is a towering reference point in the history of the motorcar, pioneering front-wheel drive on a mass-produced family saloon. It had a three-speed gearbox mounted ahead of the engine in the nose of the car, and the drive went through CV-jointed drive shafts to torsion-bar-suspended front wheels; this was cutting-edge technology in those days. By the standards of 1934, the road holding of the Traction-avant was almost unbelievably good, albeit at the expense of heavy steering.

Sadly, the high development costs sent a penniless Andre Citroen to an early grave and his company into the arms of Michelin, but the Light 15 and its many derivatives went on to success, selling strongly for 23 years. Front-wheel drive wasn't the whole story. The Light 15's unitary construction was still a rarity in 1934 and the car was both roomy and comfortable to ride in, with torsion-bar independent suspension at the rear too. Top speed with the 45 bhp 191 Ice four- cylinder engine was 70 mph (112 kph).

There were many variations on this in enduring theme. The Big 15 had an extra seven inches (17.8cm) added to its wheelbase. The Commerciale had an early form of rear hatchback. Big families could opt for the eight-seater Familiale. For sporty drivers there were rakish coupes and cabriolet models. Top of the range from 1938 was the six- cylinder, 2866cc 15CV, or Big 6, its 77 bhp engine pushing the top speed to a respectable 85 mph (137 kph). Citroen pioneered its hydropneumatic suspensions on the rare 6H version of this model which already featured their self-leveling system on rear wheels only. Styling changed little over the years, but the post-1953 Traction has a distinctive projecting boot. From 1938 to 1940 (and, after the Second World War, between1948 and 1955) these Citroens were built in significant quantities in the UK. A Slough-built car is recognizable by its wooden dash, leather trim and 12-volt electrics.

It was years before rivals began to catch up with standards set by the Light 15. Only when Citroen had another world-beater, the DS of 1955, did it finally feel obliged to let the Traction die. Many examples survive and this stylish, groundbreaking car has a cult following.
