CHEVROLET CAMARO (1970-1981) CAR HISTORY

Car review on CHEVROLET CAMARO

The unprecedented success of Ford's Mustang sent rivals General Motors into a scurry of activity. However, in the two years it took to bring its answer to production, the great heyday of the "personal coupe" had already passed.

Its answer was the Chevrolet Camaro, and even General Motors could not have been disappointed when it sold 220,000 units in its first year. It was based on the uninspiring Chevrolet Nova body/ chassis and mechanical package, but its strong suit was undoubtedly its classic "Coke bottle" styling by Bill Mitchell.

Both six-cylinder and V-eight engines were offered in various states of tune, the most extreme being the SS (Super Sport) - of which 96,275 were built -and the RS (Rallye Sport) - 143,592 built. These have since become the most prized of all Camaros. As well as the more common coupe, Chevrolet also offered convertibles.

When it came to replacing the Camaro in 1970, General Motors took its time and created a bespoke model (dedicated chassis) with monocoque construction instead of a separate frame, While the Mustang became bloated, then emasculated, the Camaro felt balanced in style and leaner, too. While the styling may have been less subtle than the first series (especially from the mid-1970s when the nose was reshaped to satisfy safety laws), the interior may have been cramped and there was no convertible option, it nevertheless struck a chord with the American buying public.

The 1970s Camaro was a big dollar earner for GM, selling almost two million examples. Overall it was nowhere near as powerful as the original series Camaro — even in Z28 form, the most desirable of 1970s Camaros. There was also a Pontiac clone called the Firebird with different engines and alternative front end styling.
