In search of a flagship glamour car to boost American market sales, as well as their flagging post-war image, in the mid-1950s BMW asked Albrecht Goertz, a German aristocrat with an American-based industrial design agency, to style a new super sports car.

Using a drastically shortened version of the big V-eight saloon's box-section chassis as his base, Goertz — later to design the best-selling Datsun 240Z - sketched a slim, pinched-waist roadster that was an object lesson in elegant purity. With its long bonnet, pert tail and impeccable detailing it was an instant classic. Producing 150 bhp from a high-compression version of BMW's fine all- alloy V-eight engine (with a four-speed 1 manual gearbox), it went as well as it looked: with the longest of the axle ratios offered, it was capable of 140 mph (225 kph) and 0-60 (96) in the order of nine seconds. Its exhaust note, a creamy full-blooded wuffle from twin rear pipes, was almost as memorable as its profile. Torsion-bar suspension front and rear gave a supple ride with confident handling, perfect for its role as a suave high-speed express for the Monte Carlo set. A handsome factory hardtop quickly converted the 507 into a snug, roomy two-seater coupe.

Beautifully crafted in alloy, the 507 of 955 was aimed squarely at the Mercedes 300SL's market, but somehow it was more of a soft tourer than the complex, difficult-to-handle SL: serious drivers never really took it to their hearts. Its saloon-derived steering was never its best feature, which is probably why its competition pedigree makes short and unimpressive reading. Like the SL, though, it was viciously expensive and each one took a long time to put together, mostly by hand.

There were few uplifting developments in its short four-year career, the most notable being more power - 160 bhp - and latterly front disc brakes. Production ceased in 1959, just 253 cars down the line. If anything, it added to BMW's financial problems.
Nonetheless, almost 40 years on, it rates as perhaps the most collectable of all post-war BMWs.
