BITTER (1971-1979) CAR HISTORY

Car review on BITTER

German-born Erich Bitter was a race driver and car-accessories tycoon. He was smitten by two Opel CD prototypes presented in 1969 and 1970 and was so disappointed that Opel did not go into production that he managed to persuade the General Motors-owned company to hand the project over to him. Opel even helped him develop the car into production-ready form.

Since Bitter did not have the resources to set up his own factory, production began in 1971 at coachbuilders Baur of Stuttgart. An Opel Diplomat saloon (sedan) chassis was shortened and its suspension retuned for the lighter car, but otherwise the mechanicals were left untouched, including GM's 5.4-litre V-eight engine.

This was a very handsome car, and definitely in the same league as Italian exotics. It could be ordered in any of 45 different colors, had a luxurious cabin trimmed by Baur and an Opel-soured dashboard. It was certainly not a cheap car, costing almost as much as a Rolls-Royce, but its quality and dashing looks persuaded many customers to flock to the hitherto unknown marque. Production got underway at the rate of about one car per week.

The big American-designed V-eight engine provided refined, torquey performance, making it ideally suited to a grand touring role, rather than an overtly sporting one. Handling was sharp but not in the same league as greats like Ferrari and Porsche.
Just as handsome as the CD was Bitter's next car, the SC. This was first shown in 1979 but took another two years to enter production. Again this used Opel parts - the newly launched Senator - and the coupe body was styled by Bitter himself. The 3.0-litre fuel-injected six-cylinder engine was more in keeping with the times than the old GM V-eight, and the later Bitter-modified 3.9-litre version was even more suitable, having an extra 30 bhp at 210 bhp. There was even the option of four-wheel drive, but only two cars were so equipped because of the expense.

Attractive cabriolet and long-wheelbase four-door versions were added in 1985, but this course proved far too ambitious: by then the company had overstretched itself and unfortunately production ended the following year; some 450 examples of the SC had been made.
Bitter went on to develop other projects but so far these have remained in prototype form. The first was a convertible called the Rallye, based on the Opel Manta, but the impending demise of the Manta led to an evolution called the Type III. In production form, this would have had Opel Senator underpinnings, but sadly plans to market the car were dropped in 1992 amid continuing financial problems. Some years later. Bitter resurfaced with an imposing and elegant new four-door saloon (sedan) car, again based around Opel components, but its production fate remains in the balance.
