The Aston Martin DB5 was an aristocrat among 1960s sports cars, as exclusive as a Savile Row suit and in Britain on its introduction in 1963, priced accordingly. The same amount of money would have bought you a nice little place in the Surrey stockbroker belt, while Jaguar's faster E-Type was just half the cost. The model's appearance in the James Bond film Goldfinger in 1964 put the name of Aston Martin on the lips of the world. Even today lan Fleming's hero is still synonymous with the marque.

The DB5 was the fifth Aston built under the regime of David Brown. It wasn't a new car, but a development of the sometimes troublesome Touring-styled 3.7-litre DB4 that had been around in one form or another since 1958. By fitting a bigger four-litre version of the twin-camshaft six-cylinder engine - with 240 bhp - and a five-speed ZF gearbox, Aston claimed more punch with longer legs. Top speed was 140 mph (225 kph) - nearer 150 mph (241 kph) with the optional tuned Vantage engine -with meaty acceleration to match.
Strange to think that in the carefree early 1960s Aston could test its cars on the still new and unrestricted M1 motorway, a spark plug’s throw from the Newport Pagnell factory.

Like all Astons before it, the DB5 broke no new technical ground but kept pace with developments. Disc brakes, fitted all round, were becoming the norm on fast cars like the DB5, but Aston were still suspicious of newfangled independent rear suspension and felt they could make their solid axle work just as well. For the most part they were - right, although the DBS was always happier on fast main roads than being chucked about on country lanes. Flared in lights for Touring's fashionable Italian bodywork, consisting of alloy panels draped over a labyrinth of small tubes, were a nod towards modern aerodynamic thought, but inside the DB5 retains its club-land feel with rich leather everywhere, electric windows (still rare in 1963) and a push-button radio: switch on and the words “Aston Martin” glowed in red from the tuner. As well as the fastback saloon, Aston built the swish Volante convertible, and David Brown even sanctioned 12 shooting brake DB5s to sell to his uppercrust country house-owning pals. These were surely the most beautiful estate cars ever built.

With sales of more than 1,000 in a little over two years, the DB5 has to be counted as one of the most successful Astons. It is certainly one of the most memorably beautiful, a slender, sensual machine highlighting how the later, more macho cars from Newport Pagnell lost their way.
