Car review on ALLARD J2/J2X

South London motor trader Sydney Allard based his famous rugged sports car on a reliable Ford V-eight engine. His pre-war Special cut its teeth in mud-lugging trails, but it wasn't until after the Second World War that Allard decided to go into production. The Kl and Jl of 1946-48 were spare and primitive but very fast, especially when fitted with the bigger 3.9 Mercury version of the well-tried flat-head Ford V-eight. Production blossomed with the more civilized versions such as the four-seater L Type and Ml, with their hallmark waterfall grilles and the best-selling PI saloon, with up to 4.4 liters, which won the Monte Carlo rally.

Best and most coveted of the breed, however, was the J2/J2X of 1949, a stark, four-wheeled motorbike of a car that, with the more modern type of overhead-valve Cadillac V-eight, could accelerate quicker than the Jaguar XK120. Nevertheless, it was the Jaguar that spelled the beginning the end for Allard and many of its ilk. The cars were produced in tiny numbers and could not compete with the mass-market Jaguar on a value-for-money basis. Sales fell sharply after 1953 and the company produced its last car, the Palm Beach, in 1958, in a belated bid for the Austin Healey market.
