The name Spider in Alfa Romeo's vocabulary dates right back to 1955, and the most famous incarnation of the model - the one driven by Dustin Hoffman in the film The Graduate — lasted 18 years in production. At the Paris Salon in September 1994, Alfa Romeo not only used the name for its exciting new roadster, it also revived another famous name from its past for a sister coupe model — GTV.

The most striking feature of this new sport scar couple was the styling. The elegant and dramatic wedge shape recalled the 1991 Proteo show car and, if anything, the production cars' styling was even more adventurous than the show car's. A collaboration between Alfa Romeo's own Styling Centre and Pininfarina, the body made full play of the famous Alfa triangular grille. Other features included a plastic clam-shell bonnet (hood) with cut-outs for the high-intensity headlamps, an uncompromising rising belt-line indentation, tapering rear flanks and air intakes at the front, which were strongly reminiscent of past Alfas.

However, Alfa Romeo departed from its sport scar traditions by opting for front-wheel drive. If anyone was in doubt about how well the new car would handle with this set-up, a simple lest drive dispelled all such concern. A unique multi-link rear suspension system allowed for a degree of rear-wheel steering, and in terms of steering response and grip around corners, the new Alfa could hardly be surpassed. There was a big difference between the ultimate abilities of the fixed-top GTV and the open Spider, though: the loss of rigidity in the body structure of the Spider let it down compared to the super-sharp GTV.

The GTV also differed from the Spider in another important respect: it had two seats in the rear, although they were so tiny that only very small children could ever be comfortable.

Performance was a definite strong suit. In Italy, there was a choice of three engines: a brand new 150bhp 2-litre 16V Twin Spark engine with variable valve liming, a 200bhp 2-litre V-six Turbo unit (GTV only) and a 192bhp 3-litre V-six. In Britain, only the Twin Spark engine was offered. All engines provided acceleration to match the sharp styling.
The cockpit was a triumph of clean design and classic feel: shrouded circular dials, sculpted steering wheel, pleasing upholstery and a profusion of Alfa Romeo badges. The driving position was unusually good for an Italian car, too.
For their price, there was little to touch Alfa's new sport scar twins in the desirability stakes. Perhaps it was the ineffable magic of the badge, or the strikingly bold shape, or the class-leading levels of handling and response. Whatever the appeal, the Spider and GTV have already passed into the realm of instant classics.
