TOYOTA CAR HISTORY

Car review on TOYOTA

While most Japanese firms turned to European design houses for their innovative designs, Toyota struck its own course. The 1969 EX III was a case in point. Here was a sleek coupe, which advanced the dream-car ideal as much as the Europeans. Its sleek shape carried over to its ultra-smooth under tray (underbody), making it very aerodynamic.

Advanced technology, maturing design

Like most Japanese makers, Toyota's dream ears struggled to find an identity until the 1980s, when advanced technology and maturing design teams began to enhance die impact of its concept machines, such as die 1984 FX-1 with its electronic suspension, cantilevered doors and variable valve timing.

On Toyota's stand at die 1987 Tokyo show was a dream car that made it to production. The little gullwing AXV-II reappeared two years later as the Sera. It may only have been a Starlet underneath, but its character was made stimulating by its expansive glass bubble top — the glass in die doors curved round to form part of tile roof.

One of the greatest technical tours de force of all time was the verdict on the 4500GT show car of 1989. Its Lexus-based V-eight engine had five valves per cylinder, the gearbox had six speeds, die suspension was variable and the run-flat tires had pressure sensors on board.

Novelties included LCD shutters for the vertically stacked headlamps and sun visor, ultra-sound wing mirrors to clear water droplets and a Noise Canceller, which emitted signals of opposite phase and amplitude to eliminate noise "booms". Although (the 4500GT may not have looked very pretty, all five that Toyota built were fully sorted road- going machines.

Concepts of all sizes
The AXV III concept car was merely a taster for the forthcoming Carina, while the 1991 AXV-IV was far interesting, mainly for its construction, in ultra-lightweight aluminum, magnesium and carbonfibre; even the springs were plastic. Immensely strong yet incredibly light (just 990 lb or 450kg), the little coupe-style commuter car was fitted with a 64bhp two-cylinder 800cc two-stroke engine.

Mega Cruiser is not a subtle name, but then this was not a subtle car. Presented at the 1993 Tokyo show, it was a monstrous off-roader, 16.4 feet (5 meters) long, with a 4.1-litre truck engine. Following a good reception, it actually made it into production as one of the world's widest cars - all 7ft 1 in (2.17 more meters) of it. The AXV-V of 1993 combined aerodynamics with advanced direct injection engine technology. Toyota claimed a Cd figure of just 0.20 - equivalent to an aero plane - which helped to give it remarkable fuel consumption. Other technological innovations included air suspension, an anti- collision automatic brake system, touch- shift transmission and I.CD monitors.

In response to a new wave of roadsters from MG, Fiat and BMW, Toyota unveiled its MRJ prototype at the 1995 Tokyo show. Actually designed by Toyota's Brussels design office, it was the company's first-ever open mid-engine car. The roof was a so-called "aero cabin" hardtop, which retracted electronically at the flick of a button.
