With Paul Bracq at the helm, Peugeot has had an illustration design influence. Its true dream-car program began on the 205 Turbo 16 rally ear, it was a formidable compact mid-engine sports car with four-wheel drive and 200bhp. Its styling was light and forward-thrusting, its interior dramatically encased by a red roll cage.

The spectacular Oxia
Without a shadow of doubt, Peugeot’s most important ever show car was the Oxia, first seen in 1988. Unlike many other dream cars, the Oxia was a fully-stunning levels of performance, as Peugeot proved during numerous well-documented test runs.

In its looks, too, the Oxia was absolutely spectacular. It was designed in-house by Gerard Welter and incorporated such Peugeot elements as low-cut headlamps, horizontal grille and rampant lion badge. The flamboyantly rakish and wide shape was realized in lightweight carbonfibre, and was topped off by an adjustable rear spoiler to help stability.

On high tech menu to set technophiles’ palates slavering were a four-wheel steering system with variable Ferguson viscous coupling), six-speed gearbox, anti-lock brakes, electronically controlled axle differentials and automatic type pressure monitors. Inside, traditional leather blended with solar-powered air-conditioning, a personal computer, a sound system described as "intergalactic" and a navigation system.

The basic engine was Peugeot's familiar 2.85-liter V-six but monstrously modified to full race specification with twin turbochargers to develop no less than 680bhp. Peugeot claimed — with justification — that the Oxia was capable of a top speed of 205mph (330kph).

Ion, Asphalle and Tonareg
At the 1994 Paris Salon, Peugeot presented the Ion, an urban study vehicle powered by electricity. Only 11 ft (3.3 meters) long, its monobox style was compact and modern, yet could fit four adults. Perhaps the main novelty was the total absence of door handles; to get in, you pressed a sensitive area on the rear wing – with your hip if your arms were full – and so released the locks. The same system worked for the large rear hatch.

“Crazy” was how somehow professionals described the extraordinary 1996 Paris Salon debutante called the Asphalte. The front-end picked up Peugeot design themes — wide snout, narrow headlamps - but toward the back-end things got very strange. The rear track was extremely narrow, so dial from die side it looked like a three-wheeler with a pinched-in tail. The ultra-smooth topless profile promised sizzling performance, but strangely Peugeot opted to install a mere 1.6-litre engine and an automatic gearbox.

The Touareg off-road buggy stood out because of its mighty, even frightening wheels, straight off a science-fiction film set. One interesting quirk was its choice of power: four electric motors, one for each of those Tonka-toy wheels.
