MITSUBISHI DREAM CARS HISTORY

Car review on Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi burst into the dream-car arena with its HSR series which originated in 1987. Active ride, four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering may not have been very original in the concept car world but the fact that 295bhp and 186mph (299kph) were available from a 2.0-litre turbo engine a show-slopping car Show-goers were impressed by the HRK's dramatically skirted shape, sophisticated electronics and novel seating, which swung out with die doors.

The stunning 1989 HSK II follow-up was officially only ever meant as a rolling lest bed for technology and ideas, but the amazing shape attracted virtually all the attention, an aim that Mitsubishi surely intended, since it featured widely in corporate advertising campaigns. Mitsubishi called tins project a Control Configured Vehicle, in oilier words a machine stuffed with computers and electronic displays. At various points around the body were flaps and wings whose position was controlled by computer so that airflow-was optimized in any given situation.

Less noticed but perhaps more significant at the 1989 Tokyo Show was the RVR leisure car. Its novel retractable windscreen and targa roof production in the Japanese-market RVR (Space Runner), which arrived in 1991.

The HSR evolved into a third generation in 1991. More compact but presence, the HSR III boasted electronically controlled suspension and traction control and a new 177bhp twin-cam 1.6 liter V-six engine. More far-fetched was the fitment of twin levers on the steering wheel in place of controls for the automatic transmission.

More outlandish 1991 Tokyo debutants were the mS 1000 and mR 1000 pairing. Catching the tidal wave of Japanese interest in all things "retro", the mS 1000 was an utterly bizarre two-tone curve-haven with a tiny chrome grille. It had two doors on die left and only one on the right, while the stubby little boot (trunk) The mR 1000 looked more feasible: a (commuter car), spoiled by flying buttresses at the rear and ugly tail lamps.

The proportions shrank even further in 1993 with the presentation of the tiny 101 in- (257 cm) long- two-seater Mum, powered by a 500cc 30bhp engine, and the Lynx, an off-roader designed around Japan's micro-car regulations – meaning maximum of 660 cc and a 130 in (330cm) overall length.

By 1993 the HSR series was in generation IV, it’s styling ever more avant-garde, notably its elastic (flexible) aero tail rear spoiler. More significant was its "biodynamic'' suspension, which became a production reality in the Gallant.
Even more bells and whistles sprouted from die 11SR-V in 1995, from elastic stabilizers to a vibrating under floor, which was "a revolutionary way of reducing drag inspired by the skin of dolphins".
