Alfa Romeo CAR HISTORY

Car review on Alfa Romeo

Traditionally, Alfa Romeo has aligned itself to the major Italian carrozzieri (design houses) when it comes to design work. It has favored Bertone, Pininfarina and Zagato, but many other independents have been drawn to the magic that is Alfa Romeo, and Alfa itself has occasionally produced a few of its own dreams in the metal.

Flying saucers and BAT-mobiles

After the Second World War; Alfa Romeo encouraged experimental bodies on its chassis. The Disco Volante ("flying saucer") race cars were collaboration with touring, for example, but of all Alfa Romeo's dream cars, the most spectacular were undoubtedly the incredible BAT series - BAT standing for Berlina Acrodinamica Tecnica. All were designed by Franco Scaglione of Bertone. The first in the series of three was the so-called BAT 5, which in 1953 was as way-out as they come. The aim was to create the most aerodynamic shape possible on an Alfa Romeo 1900 chassis, and with a claimed Cd figure of 0.23, it certainly was. The faired-in wings, sideways-popping headlamps and hawk-like nose were striking enough, but it was the rear-end that got all the attention. Two huge, inward-curving wings rose fantastically around a long central rear “tunnel”.

Things got even more outrageous with the BAT7 prototype of 1954. The rear wings began at the windscreen pillars and became so curved-in that they almost touched each other the razor-sharp central in. Huge slots in the fins equalized side pressure, and an even more aerodynamic CD figure was claimed. By the time the third and final BAT 9 arrived in 1955, the rear wings had been clipped back to vaguely modest proportions, and there were now side fins from door to tail. After three successive years of making Turin Show crowds shown, the BAT service was retired. All these cars have since been restored to a glorious condition.

Iguana, Spider, Proteo and Nuvola

Ital Design developed another spectacular Alfa concept car, the Iguana prototype of 1969. This was intended to enter production in a small series but it never did. Based on the 33 Stradale mid-engine chassis, it was notable for its brushed-steel body (ten years before the DC Lorean) and sharp nose treatment.

To many eyes the 1994 Spider and GTV production models looked like show cars. To prepare the public for the radical shape of these newcomers, Alfa Romeo designed the Proteo prototype in 1991. This had the rising belt-line and bonnet (hood) cut-outs for the headlamps, which made the Spider/GTV so distinctive, but was, based on the 164 and featured four- wheel drive, four-wheel steering and removable glass roof panels.

Alfa Romeo's design boss Walter de Silva was responsible for the striking Nuvola concept car shown at the 1996 Paris Salon. For its inspiration, this handsome car looked back to the great days, not only in its proportion and detailing but also in that it had a separate chassis, in theory allowing any body shape to be designed around it.

Alfa's own shape was extremely elegant: a long, classic bonnet, low, tapering rear, recessed lights and lots of chrome. Despite the retro flavor, it was also ultra-modern: 300bhp aluminum V-six engine, four-wheel drive, six speeds and glorious 18in (45.7cm) alloy wheels. Sadly, despite the precedent set by the Proteo, the Nuvola looked unlikely to become a production model.
