The State Guarantee Fund
The state department of insurance manages what is called the guarantee fund. This is a fund controlled by the state to which all insurance companies contribute.

If an insurance company becomes insolvent, money is available to pay outstanding
claims and reimburse policy holders for any unearned premiums paid to the insolvent
insurance company. The percentage of premiums paid by each insurance company
is a relatively small percent of all premiums collected by the insurance company.

The bottom line is if you select an insurance company that becomes insolvent,
you will eventually get your money back. However, it takes time, perhaps months, to get things resolved. In addition, the service you would receive from that company usually is very poor prior to their becoming insolvent. It is in your best interest to avoid any company that is having financial problems. In order to avoid a company in financial difficulty, you should check the A.M. Best rating for that particular company. There are several other similar insurance rating services and I'll provide a list with their phone numbers later. You can also research this information in your local library or check with your state department of insurance.
